This text for the first time called into question the early seventh or eighth-century dating of Beowulf that had been received as fact for decades. Beowulf , a hero of the Geats , comes to the aid of Hrothgar , the king of the Danes , whose mead hall in Heorot has been under attack by a monster known as Grendel. After Beowulf slays him, Grendel’s mother attacks the hall and is then also defeated.
Fifty years later, Beowulf defeats a dragon , but is mortally wounded in the battle. After his death, his attendants cremate his body and erect a tower on a headland in his memory. The poem survives in a single copy in the manuscript known as the Nowell Codex. It has no title in the original manuscript, but has become known by the name of the story’s protagonist.
The events in the poem take place over most of the sixth century, and feature no English characters. This backlash was led by R.

Finally, last year, Leonard Neidorf presented a volume with the title: The dating of Beowulf: A Reassessment, which offers a number of very detailed studies presenting overwhelming indices for the date proposed by Fulk based on his linguistic studies.
Reading the book, it soon becomes apparent that the careful trudging through all the mud left behind by the literary critics have yielded an impressive, neigh overwhelming, set of arguments, which does not leave much room for post-modern wiggling. To this should be added the nice, understated yet precise way in which the knife has been wrought.
